New SGS Wind Energy Technology Center Successfully Presented in Berlin

New SGS Wind Energy Technology Center Successfully Presented in Berlin

The Asia-Pacific Weeks Wind Energy Conference took place
on October 12, 2009 in Berlin, Germany. It was a unique
opportunity for the main German, Chinese and Asian players
to participate in a high profile meeting focusing on the
expanding industry of wind energy. Governments and
ministries, business and cultural associations, companies,
universities and research institutions, foundations
and non-governmental organizations took part in a
series of official meetings and conferences to discuss
the latest developments in the wind energy sector.

The presentations and workshops during the conference primarily dealt with the market growth in China and its corresponding challenges. Manufacturing concepts were presented and strategies for entering the market and investing in wind energy equipment were discussed.

Torsten Muu, Global Technical Manager for Wind Energy from SGS, the worlds leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, was one of the main speakers during this conference presenting the new SGS Wind Energy Technology Center (WETC) in Tianjin, China.

The SGS Wind Energy Technology Center in China mainly focuses on Rotor Blade Testing. As blade failures can have severe impact on safety, turbine downtime and public exposure, a thorough validation of the blade through full-scale testing by an independent third party is indispensable.

The WETC provides a complete set of full-scale blade testing
capabilities. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology
for load application and blade measurements, the SGS test
center can perform static and fatigue tests for various purposes:
- Certification testing according to IEC 61400-23
- Blade design validation
- Manufacturing quality testing
- Validation of repairs and design changes

Washington DC –The latest figures released yesterday by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) in its "Electric Power Monthly" report, confirm the continued growth of renewable energy in the electrical generation sector.

For the first seven months of 2009, non-hydroelectric renewables (i.e., biomass, geothermal, solar, wind) provided 78,518 thousand megawatt-hours of electricity - an increase of more than 7 percent over the same period in 2008. For the first seven-months of 2008 and 2007, net U.S. electrical generation from non-hydro renewables
was 73,321 thousand megawatt-hours and 59,557 megawatt-hours respectively.

For the period January 1 - July 31, 2009, non-hydro renewables accounted for 3.44 percent of net U.S. electrical generation. Hydropower accounted for 7.40 percent during the same time frame -- an increase of 5.1 percent over 2008. Thus, for the first seven months of 2009, renewables provided 10.84 percent of net U.S. electrical generation.

For the twelve-month period (August 1, 2008 - July 31, 2009), compared to the preceding twelve month period, conventional hydropower increased by 4.86
percent and non-hydro renewables increased by 8.23 percent. Combined, hydro and non-hydro renewables increased by 5.96 percent.

On the other hand, comparing the twelve-month periods ending July 31, 2008 and July 31, 2009, nuclear power increased by only 0.48 percent while fossil
fuels dropped by 7.67 percent. Coal used for electrical generation dropped by 9.29 percent while natural gas use dropped by 3.50 percent.

“The hand-writing on the wall is unmistakeable,” noted Ken Bossong,Executive Director of the SUN DAY Campaign. “Renewable energy has become a major player in the electricity market place and is the wave of the future as fossil fuels and nuclear power fade away.”
