While working with a long role of permanent magnets in contact with each other I noticed that a steel bar laying next to the role was not attracted to the role of magnets. When I separated the role causing an air gap the steel piece was pulled toward the gap due to it's lower reluctance as compared to the air. This was a very simple observation, but one I felt could have very important implications if this sequence was used in the correct configuration. Notice that the two magnets when in contact with each do not allow any flux to pass to the iron core of the coil. Now when the two magnets are moved apart the flux jumps to the iron core and a voltage/current is induced into the coil windings. The induced current causes a magnetic field to form that is opposite in polarity to the magnetic field of the permanent magnets. This reduces the attraction force between the two permanent magnets. The work needed to separate them is reduced. The opposite happens when the magnets are moved together. The induced current in the coil reverses and the magnetic field produced is the same polarity of the permanent magnets and creates additional attraction. This causes the magnets to be pulled apart with less work than the work the magnets do when being attracted to each other. There are different ways this principle can operate. Listed below are several but not all. 1. The center bore of the core can be vented to allow air to escape when the magnets are moving together. 2. The center bore and magnets can have an air tight fit and the compressed air can be used as a recoil system or the heated air from compression used for doing external work. 3. The system can be operated in a vacuum to eliminate all air compression between the two magnets in the core. 4. The system can be configured in a rotary fashion. The present layout is for proof of concept and ease of fabrication. A full screen animation is available. I will send it to anyone who has a real need for it.
