Washington DC -- According to the most recent issue of the
"Monthly Energy Review" by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), renewable energy sources (i.e., biofuels, biomass, geothermal, hydroelectric, solar, wind) provided 10.51 percent of domestic U.S. energy production during the first nine months of 2009 – the latest time-frame for which data has been published.
And according to EIA’s latest "Electric Power Monthly,"
renewable energy sources provided 10.21 percent of net U.S.
electrical generation for the first nine months of 2009.

This continues the steady growth trend for renewable energy. Renewable energy sources accounted for 9.67 percent of domestic energy production during the first nine months of 2007. That increased to 10.12 percent for the first three-quarters of 2008.

Domestic energy production from renewable sources grew by 4.10 percent during the first nine months of 2009 compared to the first nine months of 2008 – an increase of 0.228 quadrillion Btu’s. Most of that growth came from wind and hydropower which expanded by 28.46 percent and 4.73 percent respectively during the first three-quarters of 2009 compared to the same period in 2008.
In addition, biomass (comprised of roughly 60 percent wood + wood waste and 40 percent biofuels) grew by 1.34 percent; the growth reflects a 10.96 percent increase in biofuels production. The contributions from solar and geothermal remained essentially unchanged.
The mix of renewable energy sources consisted of hydropower
(35.16 percent), biomass (30.72 percent), biofuels (20.25 percent), wind (8.17 percent), geothermal (4.52 percent), and solar (1.17 percent).

Moreover, renewable energy’s contribution to the nation’s domestic energy production is now almost equal to that provided by nuclear power, which has been holding fairly steady in recent years (11.59 percent for the first
nine months of 2009, 11.57 percent for the first three-quarters of 2008 and 11.92 percent for the first three-quarters of 2007). In the first three-quarters of 2009, nuclear power increased by only 0.41 percent
compared to the same period in 2008, while domestic fossil
fuel production actually dropped by 0.30 percent.

“When Congress resumes its debate on pending energy and climate legislation in 2010, it would do well to take note of the clear trends in the nation’s changing energy mix,” said Ken Bossong,
Executive Director of the SUN DAY Campaign. “Renewable energy has proven itself to be a solid investment - growing rapidly and nipping at the heels of the stagnant nuclear power industry - while fossil fuel use continues to drop.”

In the electricity sector, conventional hydropower accounted for 6.89 percent of U.S. net electrical generation during the first nine months of 2009
while other renewable energy sources (biomass, geothermal, solar, wind) accounted for 3.32 percent - for a total of 10.21 percent. By comparison for the first three quarters of 2008, renewables accounted for 9.18 percent of net electrical generation (hydropower - 6.27 percent; non-hydro - 2.91 percent);and in the same period in 2007, renewables accounted for 8.72 percent of net U.S. electrical production (hydro - 6.28 percent; non-hydro - 2.44 percent).

While renewably-generated electricity has grown, overall net U.S. electrical generation was 4.72 percent lower for the first nine months of 2009 compared to the first half of 2008 with coal-generated electricity dropping by 12.86 percent.

GeneralSGS Presents Norderland Projekt GmbH with Statement of Compliance [General] 19/12/2009 @ 12:21 (GMT +9)

SGS Presents Norderland Projekt GmbH with Statement of Compliance

SGS Presents Norderland Projekt GmbH with Statement of Compliance - SGS Wind Competence Center

On September 23, 2009, the SGS Wind Competence Center provided Norderland Projekt GmbH with Statement of Compliance (SoC)for the design basis of their two offshore wind farms Northern Energy Global Tech II and Northern Energy Global Tech III.

On September 23, 2009, Norderland Projekt GmbH received
a Statement of Compliance (SoC) for the design basis of
their two wind farm projects. Both the Northern Energy
Global Tech II and the Northern Energy Global Tech III
were designed in accordance with appropriate consensus
standards, assured SGS Wind Energy Competence Center.

The Statement of Compliance is a statutory requirement and
precondition for the further development of wind farm
projects. This is why each phase of a wind farm project
has to be completed with it.

SGS Wind Energy Competence Center is an accredited partner
of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH, or
Bundesamt fr Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie) and as such
was responsible for the verification and certification
of the design basis of the two offshore wind farms.

The approval procedure of both wind farm projects lasted 3
months and comprised the verification of the design basis
and the sub-structure design of the wind farms in accordance
with the standards of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic
Agency of Germany. The verification process includes the
assessment of all environmental conditions, such as wind,
oceanographic, geotechnical and consequential load and
design assumptions.

SGS Wind Energy Services

The SGS Wind Energy Competence Center in Hamburg, Germany, is one of the leading certification and inspection companies for onshore and offshore wind energy life cycle services, and carries out certifications
in accordance with relevant standards. Through step-by-step Project Certification, SGS contributes significantly to the minimization of technical risks in wind farm projects.

SGS is committed to provide a fully comprehensive program for the Wind Energy Sector that is designed to meet the specific requirements of the wind energy market.

The SGS Group is the global leader and innovator in inspection, verification, testing and certification services. Founded in 1878, SGS is recognized as the global benchmark in quality and integrity.
